>> Glass thermometer
Glass thermometer is a thermometer invented by the physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in Amsterdam (1714). It consists of a small spherical flask containing mercury attached to a narrow diameter glass tube; The volume of mercury in the tube is much less than the volume in a small spherical flask.


>> Other information
- Mercury volume changes slightly with temperature; Small changes in mercury volume push the mercury in the column along the hollow glass tube above. The spaces above the mercury can be filled with nitrogen or it can be under atmospheric pressure, partially vacuumed. The glass column is divided into lines that show the temperature level. When looking at the mercury line in the tube for the corresponding temperature, the temperature of the object or environment under test is obtained. Mercury cannot be used to measure temperatures lower than -39˚C (due to solid mercury at temperature) or temperatures higher than 356.7˚C (mercury boiling point). Most mercury thermometers have been replaced by alcohol thermometers because alcohol is cheaper and safer than mercury.

♦ The principle of a mercury thermometer

 - Mercury and mercury thermometers are contained inside the glass tube although alternative alternatives may be available. This thermometer consists of a glass tube containing mercury, attached to the front of the metal temperature scale, and extended into a metal bulb chamber (body). ♦ Accuracy

 - Industrial thermometer accuracy is expressed in terms of variance (plus or minus) in a fractional unit. All Industrial Thermometers are accurate within a range of temperature ranges.

 - Measure the temperature for the glass bulb. The temperature change causes the column to run to expand or pull in the tube. This action is immediately displayed in the temperature scale calibration tube. For legibility, the tube is formed with a front lens to create an enlarged red reading column.
