Some common errors when using TDS testers and how to fix them

TDS, commonly known as total dissolved solids, is an indicator of water quality. A simple yet effective way to better understand the water we use every day. With the role of checking the cleanliness of water, the TDS meter helps ensure safe water for humans and protects the living environment for organisms.

Using TDS meter and some common errors

During the process of using a TDS meter, you may encounter some problems such as unstable electrode operation, flickering display screen, or inconsistent measurement results between tests. It is necessary to know the cause of these errors and how to identify them to have the most appropriate solution

The sensitivity of the electrode decreases, making the processing speed slow

After a period of use, the TDS meter may experience a decrease in electrode sensitivity, leading to slow processing speed and affecting the accuracy of measurement results. You can recognize this problem when the device responds slowly or the TDS index displayed is unstable. These signs indicate that the electrode needs to be inspected and maintained to ensure the device operates efficiently and stably.

The display screen flashes

A common error when using a TDS meter is that the screen flickers continuously. This phenomenon often comes from the fact that the power source is no longer enough for the device to operate. In this case, you just need to check and replace the battery so the device can operate stably again. This is an important step to ensure that water testing equipment always operates continuously without interruption.

Measurement results are unstable

Although the TDS meter has an allowable error, if when testing the same water sample the difference exceeds 3–5%, the device may be having problems or the measurement method is not correct. To handle this, make sure you perform measurements according to the instructions for use and perform regular calibration. 

How to handle errors when using a TDS meter 

For slow processing speed errors due to reduced electrode sensitivity, the electrode should be calibrated regularly, especially before and after each measurement.

When measuring TDS, carefully dip the probe tip of the meter into the water sample. Make sure that the water does not exceed the level specified on the pen body, as some devices are not designed to be waterproof.   

In addition, avoid measuring water with too high a temperature, as improper temperature can negatively affect the life and performance of the meter..
