- Atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) is a specialized equipment used to analyze the concentration of heavy metals in the environment of air, soil, water, fertilizers and agricultural products.

♦ Atomic absorption spectrometric method:
The method is based on the atomic vapor absorption principle. A typical radiant energy specific to that atom is projected to the cloud. Then measure the residual intensity of this characteristic radiation after it has been absorbed by the atomic vapor, which will calculate the elemental concentration in the sample to be analyzed.

♦ Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS)
Includes the following basic parts:
- Source of resonant radiation of the element to be analyzed: usually HCL hollow cathode lamp (Hollow Cathode Lamp) or EDL (Electronic Discharge Lamp).
There are two types of sample atomization techniques:
 Flame atomization technique, using C2H2 gas and compressed air or nitrous oxide (N2O), called Flame AAS.
 + The flame-free atomization technique, using an electric furnace, called ETA-AAS (Electro -Thermal-Atomization AAS)
- The monochromator is responsible for receiving, separating and recording the characteristic radiation after being absorbed
- Electronic / computer system for controlling and data processing

♦ The machine has two types of atomization techniques:
Atomization by flame (applies to most elements: Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe, ..)

+ No flame atomization technique

Graphite Furnace AAS (GFA): Applicable to most elements with high analytical sensitivity. Patterns with very complex backgrounds such as biological or geological substrates can be analyzed. Incorporation of the autosampler system shortens the analysis time and uses a very small amount of analytical samples (clinical analyzers).

- Hydride vapor generator (HVG): Used to determine the elements that can create gaseous hydride compounds: Arsenic, Selenium, Antimony, Tin, Bismuth, ...

Mercury Vapor Unit (MVU): Suitable for mercury analysis in a variety of samples. The mercury concentration can be determined up to a concentration of 0.1 ppb

 The AAS machine can analyze the parameters in samples with concentrations from ppb - ppm.

♦ AAS Advantages:

  • High accuracy of AAS machine: RSD <2%
  • Very good repeatability: RSD <1%
  • Sensitivity: very sensitive, measured content to ppb (micrograms / kg)
  • Low investment cost compared to ICP-OES machine
  • Low investment cost compared to ICP-OES machine
