Kyoritsu 1011 Multimeter, K1011, and notes on use.

09/04/2013 10:57:24

Although it was introduced many years ago, the Kyoritsu 1011 Digital Multimeter remains a popular choice among technicians for daily electrical maintenance in factories, HVAC systems, electrical control panels, and residential electrical troubleshooting. This compact and durable multimeter provides all the essential measurement functions required for routine maintenance, including AC/DC voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, frequency, temperature, and diode testing.

The Digital Multimeter Kyoritsu 1011 provides all the essential measurement functions required for routine maintenance, including AC/DC voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, frequency, temperature, and diode testing.

Features of the Kyoritsu 1011 Digital Multimeter

  • Designed in compliance with international safety standards: IEC 61010-1, IEC 61010-031, and IEC 61326.

  • REL (Relative Measurement) function for comparing measured values (Express: Pulse Width / Pulse: Duty Cycle as a percentage).

  • Data Hold function and built-in fuse protection.

  • Diode test and continuity test functions.

  • Temperature measurement range: -50°C to 300°C (up to 700°C when used with an optional external K-type thermocouple).

  • Safety rating: CAT III 300 V / CAT II 600 V, providing protection against transient overvoltage.

  • Automatically powers off after 15 minutes of inactivity.

Read the User Manual Carefully Before Using the Kyoritsu 1011

Proper operation helps ensure both user safety and the long-term reliability of the instrument.

Preparation Before Use

Before each measurement, take a few minutes to inspect the multimeter. This simple check helps reduce the risk of inaccurate readings and improves safety when working with electrical circuits.

  • Carefully examine the instrument housing, LCD display, and test leads. Do not use the meter if you notice cracks in the casing, worn probe tips, damaged insulation, or broken lead wires, as these defects may compromise electrical insulation and operator safety.

  • Check the batteries and fuse. When the low-battery indicator appears on the display, replace both AA batteries before performing critical measurements. If the current measurement function stops working, inspect and replace the fuse only with the type specified by the manufacturer. Never substitute it with a fuse of a different rating.

  • Before taking measurements, confirm that the rotary selector is set to the correct function and that the test leads are connected to the appropriate input terminals (COM, VΩ, or A/mA). Incorrect lead placement is one of the most common causes of blown fuses and damage to the multimeter.

Danger

The following situations may result in serious injury or death:

  • Do not operate the digital multimeter if the battery cover or fuse cover is not securely installed.

  • Never use the instrument in locations containing flammable gases, solvent vapors, or explosive atmospheres where electrical sparks may ignite hazardous materials.

  • Do not exceed the instrument's safety rating of CAT III 300 V or CAT II 600 V, even if the measured voltage appears to be within the meter's measurement range.

  • Never measure current while the test lead is connected to the voltage input terminal, or measure voltage while the lead remains in the current input terminal. This common mistake can blow the protective fuse and may create an electrical arc.

  • Never replace the fuse with an incorrect type or bypass it using wire or other conductive materials. Doing so completely eliminates the overcurrent protection designed into the instrument.

Caution

The KEW 1011 Digital Multimeter is designed in accordance with the IEC 61010 safety standard. However, users must still follow proper operating procedures to ensure safe operation.

  • Do not switch measurement functions or ranges while the test probes are still connected to a live circuit. Doing so may cause electrical arcing or damage the internal measurement circuitry.

  • When measuring voltage, never switch directly to resistance, continuity, diode, or capacitance measurement modes while the circuit is energized. These functions should only be used after the power has been completely disconnected and all capacitors have been fully discharged.

  • If the instrument has been dropped, subjected to a severe impact, or exposed to excessive moisture, inspect all functions carefully before using it again. Although the meter may still appear to operate normally, its insulation performance may no longer meet the original safety specifications.

  • After completing your measurements, always turn the rotary selector to the OFF position. This helps conserve battery power and reduces the risk of accidental operation during the next use.

Storage and Maintenance Guidelines

  • Do not expose the digital multimeter to direct sunlight, high temperatures, excessive humidity, or condensation.

  • If the multimeter will not be used for an extended period, remove the batteries before storing it.

  • Clean the exterior using a soft cloth dampened with water or a mild neutral detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners or organic solvents.

  • The maximum recommended continuous current measurement time is 15 seconds. Exceeding this duration may cause the instrument to overheat and result in permanent damage.
